Applied Principles of Engines and Compressors
Course I of our Basic Track Training
This class has been described as an engine fundamental class that provides a solid foundation to any employee involved in the operation and maintenance of reciprocating engines and compressors. Although the principles described are simple and easy to understand, the class is both stimulating and challenging.

The course topics include:

  • 2-stroke cycle and 4-stroke cycle theory and operation
  • Mechanical linkages
  • Engine configurations (inline, "V", vertically opposed piston, and horizontals)
  • Terminology (peak firing pressure, mean effective pressure, compression pressure, etc.)
  • Horsepower, torque, and brake specific fuel consumption
  • Engine balance
  • Detonation, pre-ignition, misfires, and dead cylinders
  • Fundamentals of combustion characteristics (the effects of rich/lean, advance/retard, etc.)
  • Emissions formation theory and emission control technologies
  • Compressor horsepower, pressure-volume curves, rod load, and unloading devices
  • Compressor valves
